Tenuta San Guido, located in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, was founded by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. Famous for creating Sassicaia — the iconic Super Tuscan that pioneered Bordeaux varieties in Italy — the estate introduced Le Difese in 2002 as its most approachable wine. It blends international Cabernet Sauvignon with native Sangiovese, reflecting the family’s vision of elegant, food-friendly Tuscan reds while sharing selected lots from the same hillside vineyards as Sassicaia and Guidalberto. Le Difese 2022 is a blend of approximately 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon (percentages vary slightly by source). Grapes were hand-harvested in September. The wine underwent traditional fermentation followed by aging in previously used French oak barriques (mainly from Guidalberto) for about 12-15 months, then rested in steel. Alcohol: 13.5%. The challenging yet balanced 2022 vintage delivered concentration with freshness.
Deep vibrant ruby with purple highlights. Intense aromatic nose of fresh berries, cherry, blackcurrant, spiced notes, anise, and subtle Mediterranean herbs. The palate offers beautiful intensity of fruit, soft texture, ripe yet well-integrated tannins, vibrant acidity, and a clean, mineral, balsamic finish. Approachable and supple now, with elegance and drinkability that will improve over the next 8–10 years. Perfect with pasta, grilled meats, or Tuscan classics.
