ABOUT THE WINE

Founded in 2001 by siblings Marilisa Allegrini and Walter Allegrini from the historic Allegrini family of Valpolicella (Veneto), it marked their bold venture beyond their native region to explore Bolgheri's exceptional terroir and coastal influence. The name "Poggio al Tesoro" translates to "hill of treasure," reflecting the precious land they discovered. Starting with just a few hectares, the estate has grown to over 100 hectares (with about 64 under vine), spread across four distinct plots: Le Sondraie, Via Bolgherese, Chiesina di San Giuseppe, and Valle di Cerbaia. This diversity allows for varied soils and microclimates, emphasizing varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Vermentino. Marilisa Allegrini now leads the winery with her daughters, focusing on sustainability, innovation, and tradition. Flagship wines include Sondraia Bolgheri Superiore and Dedicato a Walter (a rare 100% Cabernet Franc). Today, it stands as one of Bolgheri's largest and most acclaimed estates.
Mediterra is a Syrah-led blend: 40% Syrah, 30% Merlot, and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from plots like Le Sondraie and Valle di Cerbaia. Vinification includes de-stemming, soft pressing, temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, and aging partly in steel plus 8 months in second-passage French oak barriques. Alcohol typically around 14%.

TASTING NOTE:

Intense ruby red, it exudes Mediterranean character with aromas of wild blackberry, black pepper, black olive, eucalyptus, Mediterranean scrub, herbs, and subtle sea salt. On the palate, it's medium- to full-bodied, fragrant, and intensely fruity with red and black berries (blackberries, plums, cherries), spice, earth, underbrush, fine tannins, soft texture, and a fresh, enveloping finish—expressive, balanced, and evocative of sun-kissed fruit and sea breezes.
