Tenuta San Guido is a legendary winery located in the Bolgheri region of Tuscany, Italy. The winery was founded by Mario Incisa della Rocchetta in the 1940s, who was inspired by the Bordeaux-style wines he had tasted while living in France. Tenuta San Guido Le Difese is named after the Italian word "difese," which means "defenses," and is a tribute to the medieval castle that once stood on the estate. Le Difese is a more affordable wine compared to Tenuta San Guido's flagship wine, Sassicaia, but it still showcases the same commitment to quality and attention to detail.
Le Difese’s first vintage was 2002. It is the latest addition at Tenuta San Guido. It is an extremely pleasant, smooth and versatile wine that welcomes a selection of grapes blended with Sangiovese, while it exemplifies its qualities when paired with food. Le Difese takes its name from the teeth of the wild boar, depicted in gold on the label.
Tenuta San Guido's entry-level red is the 2020 Le Difese. This blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 55% Sangiovese shows hints of ripe fruit and cherry with wild plum, redcurrant and bitter almond. That element of Sangiovese adds some floral intensity too, which comes across as lilac root or dried violet. That said, you definitely feel the softness and sweetness of the hot-vintage fruit.
Tenuta San Guido Le Difese IGT Toscana 2020 pairs well with a wide range of dishes, including grilled meats, roasted vegetables, and rich pasta dishes. It is also an excellent choice for cellaring, as it can age for up to 8-10 years.
