ABOUT THE WINE

Founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti in Montalcino, Tuscany, Canalicchio di Sopra is a family-run estate renowned for its Sangiovese wines. Managed today by Francesco and Marco Ripaccioli, the winery spans 16 hectares across two distinct terroirs: clay-rich soils in the Canalicchio Cru and rocky galestro at Gode di Montosoli. This diversity adds complexity to their wines. Committed to quality, the estate employs meticulous vineyard practices and sustainable methods. Their Rosso di Montalcino, first produced in 1975, is a benchmark for the appellation, blending elegance with the vibrant character of Montalcino’s terroir, earning consistent critical acclaim.
The 2018 Canalicchio di Sopra Vigna La Casaccia Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is 100% Sangiovese from 30-year-old vines in the clay-rich La Casaccia vineyard, planted in 1990 at 297-315 meters altitude. Hand-harvested grapes undergo a 25-day maceration in temperature-controlled steel tanks, followed by 36 months of aging in Slavonian oak barrels. Bottled unfiltered, it has 14.5% alcohol, minimal sulfites, and is certified organic. The clay soils with calcium and mineral elements contribute to the wine’s structure, bright color, and silky tannins, making it a refined expression of Montalcino’s terroir.

TASTING NOTE:

The 2018 Vigna La Casaccia Brunello displays a clear ruby-garnet hue, opening with a complex nose of wild raspberry, black cherry, and rose, with smoky undertones. The palate is structured yet approachable, offering ripe dark berries, licorice, tobacco, and eucalyptus notes. Fine, grippy tannins and vibrant acidity provide balance, while its compact fruit evolves into a multi-layered, elegant finish. Grilled meat, herbs, and saffron nuances add depth, with sour cherries and orange zest enhancing its savoriness. Best served at 16-18°C, it pairs with wild boar or aged cheeses.
