San Polo Montalcino is a distinguished organic winery in the heart of the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG zone, renowned for elegant, terroir-driven Sangiovese wines. Acquired in 2007 by Marilisa Allegrini (of the famed Valpolicella Allegrini family) and now run with her daughters Carlotta and Caterina, the estate spans 22 hectares (about 54 acres) at 450 meters elevation on the cooler southeastern slopes of Montalcino. This location provides a breezy microclimate with significant day-night temperature swings, ideal for producing fresh, aromatic Brunellos. The winery emphasizes sustainability and regenerative viticulture. It was the first in Tuscany to earn CasaClima certification (like LEED) and operates an innovative, largely underground cellar that blends tradition with modern eco-friendly practices. All wines are 100% estate-grown and bottled.
San Polo Vignavecchia Brunello di Montalcino 2016 is the estate’s flagship single-vineyard cru and smallest production wine. It comes from a tiny 2-hectare west-facing parcel planted in 1988 on a steep hill at ~450m elevation in the southeastern zone of Montalcino. The old vines and unique terroir (stony, calcareous soils with excellent exposure) deliver exceptional concentration and elegance. 100% Sangiovese. Hand-harvested in small crates in early October. Soft crushing, fermentation and malolactic in 600L tonneaux. Aged 30 months in lightly toasted 600L tonneaux with thick staves, followed by at least 6 months in bottle. Alcohol 14.5%. Very limited production. Organic viticulture.
Intense ruby. Fragrant nose of pine, blue flower, wild herbs, menthol, violet, and red fruit. Firm, linear, and tightly wound palate with Marasca cherry, spiced cranberry, licorice, tobacco, and coffee. Fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and impressive length. Youthful and austere now, with excellent aging potential.
