ABOUT THE WINE

Founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti in Montalcino, Tuscany, Canalicchio di Sopra is a family-run estate renowned for its Sangiovese wines. Managed today by Francesco and Marco Ripaccioli, the winery spans 16 hectares across two distinct terroirs: clay-rich soils in the Canalicchio Cru and rocky galestro at Gode di Montosoli. This diversity adds complexity to their wines. Committed to quality, the estate employs meticulous vineyard practices and sustainable methods. Their Rosso di Montalcino, first produced in 1975, is a benchmark for the appellation, blending elegance with the vibrant character of Montalcino’s terroir, earning consistent critical acclaim.
The 2018 Canalicchio di Sopra Vigna Montosoli Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is 100% Sangiovese from 21-year-old vines in the Montosoli Cru, planted in 1997 at 215-255 meters altitude. Grown on marl and limestone soils, grapes are hand-harvested and undergo a 25-day maceration in stainless steel tanks. The wine ages 36 months in Slavonian oak barrels (25-50 hl) and is bottled unfiltered with 14.5% alcohol, 5.6 g/L total acidity, and minimal sulfites. Certified organic, the 2018 vintage offers structure and balance, reflecting Montosoli’s mineral-driven terroir.

TASTING NOTE:

The 2018 Vigna Montosoli Brunello displays a radiant ruby-garnet hue, with a bouquet of wild cherry, rosehip, and violets, laced with graphite and Mediterranean herbs. The palate is elegant and structured, revealing ripe blackberry, cassis, and leather, with fine, chalky tannins and vibrant acidity. Subtle notes of anise and mineral salinity enhance its refined, lingering finish. Best served at 16-18°C, it pairs beautifully with venison or aged Pecorino. Approachable now with decanting, it will evolve gracefully through 2038, showcasing Montosoli’s hallmark minerality and depth.
