ABOUT THE WINE

A lifelong ambassador of Allegrini wines, Marilisa Allegrini was the first Italian woman to appear on the cover of Wine Spectator and was recently named Cavaliere del Lavoro. She is the heroine of a unique story full of passion and foresight, dedication, and respect for the environment. A story that starts with the family business in Valpolicella - Veneto - and her arrival in Tuscany in 2001 to implement the ambitious production diversification project right here in this unique and multi-faceted terroir. San Polo is a proud representative of this project, with its organic vineyards, its certifications, its avant-garde cellar where sustainable architecture rules, and most importantly, with its forward-thinking philosophy. It is a captivating story, also intertwining the fate of her daughters Carlotta and Caterina, who today, alongside their mother, continue this entrepreneurial project with the values, ethics, and same spirit of innovation and determination that was once founded on the family’s great passion for wine.
Brunello, a red wine of great power and elegance, is the ultimate expression of Sangiovese, characterized in Montalcino by a dark brown tint and unique, intense aromas and flavours. One of the best known, most sought-after and longest-lived wines in the world, it is an iconic Italian wine and a symbol of excellence. At San Polo, the Allegrini estate in Montalcino, our Brunello is the result of tremendous love and respect for the land and an ethical decision, uniting expertly-crafted quality and sustainability.

TASTING NOTE:

The San Polo 2017 Brunello di Montalcino (made with organic fruit) opens to a really fun and unique bouquet. I found aromas of dried herb, oregano and wild licorice, which I don't find in other wines from this vintage. There is also a pretty floral component that actually outpaces those characteristic aromas of cherry and redcurrant that you always get with Sangiovese. This wine has that extra layer of balsam intensity that sets it apart in a crowd.

FOOD PAIRING:

Red meat, furred and feathered game, mushrooms and truffles. Excellent with cheese such as mature Tome, Parmigiano Reggiano and Tuscan pecorino.
