San Polo Montalcino is a distinguished organic winery in the heart of the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG zone, renowned for elegant, terroir-driven Sangiovese wines. Acquired in 2007 by Marilisa Allegrini (of the famed Valpolicella Allegrini family) and now run with her daughters Carlotta and Caterina, the estate spans 22 hectares (about 54 acres) at 450 meters elevation on the cooler southeastern slopes of Montalcino. This location provides a breezy microclimate with significant day-night temperature swings, ideal for producing fresh, aromatic Brunellos. The winery emphasizes sustainability and regenerative viticulture. It was the first in Tuscany to earn CasaClima certification (like LEED) and operates an innovative, largely underground cellar that blends tradition with modern eco-friendly practices. All wines are 100% estate-grown and bottled.
San Polo Podernovi Brunello di Montalcino 2015 is the inaugural release of San Polo’s prestigious single-vineyard Brunello. Sourced from a 3-hectare southeast-facing parcel (Podernovi vineyard) at ~450m elevation on the cooler southeastern slopes of Montalcino. 100% Sangiovese. Hand-harvested in early October. Soft crushing, fermentation in 2500L Slavonian oak vats. Aged 30 months in large lightly toasted 4000L casks, followed by at least 6 months in bottle. Alcohol ~14.5%. Very limited production.
Intense ruby with garnet reflections. Complex nose of violet, cherry, plum, wild berries, floral hints (cyclamen, jasmine), spice, and subtle underbrush. Full-bodied yet elegant, with dense ripe tannins, vibrant acidity, layers of dark fruit, licorice, tobacco, and a long, harmonious finish.
