Weingut Wittmann, located in Westhofen, Rheinhessen, has been crafting wines since 1663, with 15 generations of expertise. Managed by Philipp Wittmann, alongside father Günther (vineyards) and mother Elisabeth (sales), the estate spans 62 acres of limestone-rich soils. Pioneers in sustainable practices, they adopted organic viticulture in 1990 and biodynamic methods in 2004, earning organic certification. Renowned for full-bodied, balanced dry Rieslings, Wittmann’s wines express terroir with precision. Philipp, a former VDP Rheinhessen president, has elevated the estate to global acclaim, twice earning Germany’s best white winemaker title (Eichelmann, 2003, 2013; Gault Millau, 2014).
The 2022 Wittmann Brunnenhäuschen GG Riesling is sourced from the VDP.Grosse Lage Brunnenhäuschen vineyard, a steep, south-facing slope with heavy limestone and clay marl soils. Hand-harvested Riesling grapes are gently pressed and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in large, neutral oak barrels. The wine matures for 10–12 months in the estate’s 1829 vaulted cellar, unfiltered and unfined. Yields are low, around 30 hl/ha, producing a bone-dry wine (<1 g/l residual sugar) with 12.5–13% alcohol. Bottled in July 2023, this vintage offers intense minerality and structure, with aging potential through 2050.
The 2022 Wittmann Brunnenhäuschen GG Riesling shines with a pale gold hue and crystalline clarity. Its nose reveals concentrated aromas of ripe peach, Meyer lemon, and wet slate, with subtle herbal and floral notes. On the palate, it’s powerful yet refined, offering vibrant citrus, green apple, and a pronounced chalky minerality, underpinned by laser-sharp acidity. The texture is dense, with a long, saline finish that reflects the limestone terroir. This complex Riesling pairs well with shellfish or creamy cheeses and will evolve beautifully over decades. Decant to fully appreciate its depth and intensity.
