Weingut Wittmann, located in Westhofen, Rheinhessen, has been crafting wines since 1663, with 15 generations of expertise. Managed by Philipp Wittmann, alongside father Günther (vineyards) and mother Elisabeth (sales), the estate spans 62 acres of limestone-rich soils. Pioneers in sustainable practices, they adopted organic viticulture in 1990 and biodynamic methods in 2004, earning organic certification. Renowned for full-bodied, balanced dry Rieslings, Wittmann’s wines express terroir with precision. Philipp, a former VDP Rheinhessen president, has elevated the estate to global acclaim, twice earning Germany’s best white winemaker title (Eichelmann, 2003, 2013; Gault Millau, 2014).
The 2022 Wittmann Morstein GG Riesling is crafted from Riesling grapes grown in the VDP. Grosse Lage Morstein vineyard, a south-facing slope (180–240 meters altitude) with 20% incline. The soil, composed of clayish marl with limestone inclusions and limestone rock subsoil, imparts intense minerality. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in neutral barrels, and aged for 10–12 months in large oak casks. The wine is unfiltered, unfined, and vegan, with a yield of 30–35 hl/ha. Alcohol is approximately 12.5–13%, with bone-dry residual sugar (<1 g/l). Bottled in July 2023, it’s built for long aging (2028–2050).
The 2022 Wittmann Morstein GG Riesling exhibits a pale gold hue with vibrant clarity. Its nose offers pure chalk, salt, and white smoke, with subtle apple, fennel, and caraway notes. On the palate, it’s intensely mineral, with arrow-straight acidity and maritime hints of oyster water. The texture is tight, with fine phenolics and concentrated citrus, delivering a long, precise finish. This youthful, powerful Riesling balances elegance and depth, reflecting Morstein’s limestone terroir. Decanting is recommended to reveal its complexity. Pair with seafood or aged cheeses; it will evolve beautifully over decades.
