Domaine de Villemajou, located in the heart of Corbières-Boutenac, is a flagship estate of Gérard Bertrand, a leading figure in Languedoc winemaking. Acquired by his father, Georges, in 1970, the 130-hectare estate holds special significance for Bertrand, who honed his craft here. Renowned for its old Carignan vines, the domaine spearheaded the Boutenac cru’s recognition in 2005. Employing organic practices, the estate’s unique terroir of round pebbles and limestone over clay-sandstone yields concentrated, elegant wines. Bertrand’s commitment to quality and innovation has made Villemajou a benchmark for Corbières-Boutenac, earning global acclaim.
The 2020 Domaine de Villemajou Corbières Boutenac is a blend of Carignan, Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre from low-yielding, hand-harvested vines on limestone and rolled pebble soils. Carignan and Syrah undergo carbonic maceration (10–18 days), while Grenache is traditionally macerated (15–20 days) after crushing. The wine ages 10–12 months in French Nevers oak barrels, followed by cement tank maturation. Unfiltered and unfined, it has 15.5% alcohol and yields of 30–35 hl/ha. The deep, well-drained soils and Mediterranean climate contribute to its intense fruit and structure, ideal for aging 8–10 years.
The 2020 Domaine de Villemajou Corbières Boutenac displays a deep ruby-garnet hue. Its nose offers rich blackberry, cassis, and licorice, with hints of toasted bread, clove, and garrigue. On the palate, it’s full-bodied yet elegant, with jammy black fruit, sweet spices, and leather, supported by fine, integrated tannins. The finish is long, with notes of coffee and dark chocolate, reflecting its oak aging. This complex, structured wine pairs beautifully with grilled red meats, lamb, or aged cheeses. Decant for 1–2 hours to enhance its depth. It’s approachable now but will evolve gracefully over the next decade.
