Domaine de Villemajou, located in the heart of Corbières-Boutenac, is a flagship estate of Gérard Bertrand, a leading figure in Languedoc winemaking. Acquired by his father, Georges, in 1970, the 130-hectare estate holds special significance for Bertrand, who honed his craft here. Renowned for its old Carignan vines, the domaine spearheaded the Boutenac cru’s recognition in 2005. Employing organic practices, the estate’s unique terroir of round pebbles and limestone over clay-sandstone yields concentrated, elegant wines. Bertrand’s commitment to quality and innovation has made Villemajou a benchmark for Corbières-Boutenac, earning global acclaim.
The 2022 Domaine de Villemajou Corbières Boutenac blends Carignan (from 80-year-old vines), Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre, grown on limestone and rolled pebble soils. Hand-harvested grapes undergo selective double sorting. Carignan and Syrah are vinified via carbonic maceration (10–18 days), while Grenache follows traditional maceration (15–20 days). The wine ages 10–12 months in French Nevers oak barrels, then matures in cement tanks. Unfiltered and unfined, it has 15% alcohol and yields of 25–35 hl/ha. The Mediterranean climate and deep-rooted vines ensure concentrated fruit and balanced structure, with aging potential of 6–8 years.


TASTING NOTE:


The 2022 Domaine de Villemajou Corbières Boutenac boasts a deep garnet hue. Its nose reveals intense aromas of candied blackberry, licorice, and toasted bread, accented by clove and garrigue. On the palate, it’s round and full-bodied, with elegant, fine-grained tannins framing rich black fruit, coffee, and sweet spice flavors. The finish is long, with a touch of salted licorice and dark chocolate. This harmonious, complex wine pairs superbly with grilled red meats, game, or mature cheeses. Decant for 1–2 hours to unlock its depth. Approachable now, it will evolve beautifully over the next decade.
