ABOUT THE WINE

Founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti in Montalcino, Tuscany, Canalicchio di Sopra is a family-run estate renowned for its Sangiovese wines. Managed today by Francesco and Marco Ripaccioli, the winery spans 16 hectares across two distinct terroirs: clay-rich soils in the Canalicchio Cru and rocky galestro at Gode di Montosoli. This diversity adds complexity to their wines. Committed to quality, the estate employs meticulous vineyard practices and sustainable methods. Their Rosso di Montalcino, first produced in 1975, is a benchmark for the appellation, blending elegance with the vibrant character of Montalcino’s terroir, earning consistent critical acclaim.
The 2023 Canalicchio di Sopra Rosso di Montalcino DOC is 100% Sangiovese, primarily sourced from younger vines in the clay-rich Canalicchio Cru, with a small portion from Montosoli’s marl soils. Hand-harvested grapes undergo a 20-day maceration in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by 12 months of aging in 50hl Slavonian oak barrels and 750L French oak tonneaux. The wine is bottled unfiltered with 14% alcohol, 5.76 g/L total acidity, 30.35 g/L total extract, and less than 1 g/L residual sugar. Certified organic, it contains 79 mg/L sulfites, ensuring a pure expression of Montalcino’s terroir.

TASTING NOTE:

The 2023 Rosso di Montalcino presents a vibrant ruby red color, with an inviting nose of rose petals, wild strawberries, and white pepper, accented by subtle citrus and sour cranberry. The palate is elegant yet structured, offering ripe forest fruits, cherry, and cassis, with a savory core and fine, taut tannins. Its crisp acidity and mineral-driven finish provide balance and freshness, making it both approachable and refined. Best served at 16-18°C, it pairs wonderfully with grilled meats, risotto, or medium-aged cheeses. This wine is enjoyable now but can age gracefully through 2032.
