ABOUT THE WINE

Founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti in Montalcino, Tuscany, Canalicchio di Sopra is a family-run estate renowned for its Sangiovese wines. Managed today by Francesco and Marco Ripaccioli, the winery spans 16 hectares across two distinct terroirs: clay-rich soils in the Canalicchio Cru and rocky galestro at Gode di Montosoli. This diversity adds complexity to their wines. Committed to quality, the estate employs meticulous vineyard practices and sustainable methods. Their Rosso di Montalcino, first produced in 1975, is a benchmark for the appellation, blending elegance with the vibrant character of Montalcino’s terroir, earning consistent critical acclaim.
The 2022 Canalicchio di Sopra Rosso di Montalcino DOC is 100% Sangiovese from younger vines in the Canalicchio Cru, grown on clay-rich soils with magnesium, iron, and manganese. Hand-harvested, the grapes undergo a three-week maceration and fermentation in stainless steel, followed by 12 months of aging in Slavonian oak barrels (25-50 hl) and French oak tonneaux (750L). The wine is bottled unfiltered with an alcohol content of 14.5% vol. and minimal sulfites. Certified organic, it occasionally includes declassified Brunello fruit from the Montosoli cru, enhancing its depth and structure, making it a versatile expression of Montalcino’s terroir.

TASTING NOTE:

The 2022 Rosso di Montalcino boasts a lively ruby red hue, opening with a bouquet of rose petals, wild strawberries, and white pepper. On the palate, it’s polished and plush, offering red cherry, dark raspberry, and balsamic notes, underpinned by graphite and saline minerality. Its crunchy acidity and fine, grippy tannins provide structure, while the silky texture and vibrant fruit make it approachable yet complex. Subtle hints of pine needle and rose jam enhance its elegance. Best served at 16-18°C, it pairs beautifully with pasta, grilled meats, or aged cheeses, drinking well now through 2032.
