Founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti in Montalcino, Tuscany, Canalicchio di Sopra is a family-run estate renowned for its Sangiovese wines. Managed today by Francesco and Marco Ripaccioli, the winery spans 16 hectares across two distinct terroirs: clay-rich soils in the Canalicchio Cru and rocky galestro at Gode di Montosoli. This diversity adds complexity to their wines. Committed to quality, the estate employs meticulous vineyard practices and sustainable methods. Their Rosso di Montalcino, first produced in 1975, is a benchmark for the appellation, blending elegance with the vibrant character of Montalcino’s terroir, earning consistent critical acclaim.
The 2020 Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is 100% Sangiovese, sourced from vines in the Canalicchio and Montosoli crus, grown on clay and marl soils. Hand-harvested grapes undergo a 25-day maceration in stainless steel tanks, followed by 36 months of aging in large Slavonian oak barrels (25-50 hl). Bottled unfiltered, it has 14.5% alcohol, 5.8 g/L total acidity, and minimal sulfites. Certified organic, the wine benefits from the 2020 vintage’s ideal conditions, with warm days and cool nights ensuring ripe fruit and balanced acidity, reflecting Montalcino’s terroir with finesse.
The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino reveals a brilliant ruby-garnet hue, with an enticing nose of red cherry, violets, and earthy truffle, accented by hints of leather and thyme. On the palate, it’s harmonious and structured, offering juicy blackberry, cassis, and balsamic notes, with silky tannins and vibrant acidity. Subtle mineral and graphite undertones add depth, leading to a refined, lingering finish with touches of orange peel and spice. Best served at 16-18°C, it pairs beautifully with roasted lamb or aged Pecorino. Drink now with decanting or cellar through 2040 for added complexity.
