Mayer Dr. Mayer Pinot Noir Yarra Valley 2023, a bold, stalk-driven gem from Australia's cool-climate Yarra Valley, honors the legacy of Timo Mayer, a fourth-generation winemaker from Germany's Württemberg region. Arriving Down Under in the mid-1990s, Timo honed his craft at De Bortoli and Gembrook Hill before founding his 2.5-hectare estate near Healesville in 1999, planting high-density vines on steep, iron-rich slopes. This flagship, 100% whole-bunch fermented and aged 10 months in older French oak, draws from 25-year-old vines in the estate's Bloody Hill block. Tasting notes erupt with a translucent ruby hue and an overt bouquet of blood orange, Campari bitters, raw cocoa, black cherry, and pan-fried green peppercorns, layered with strawberry shortcake, grated carrot, paprika, and forest floor earth. Medium- to full-bodied, it charges the palate with sour cherry, tobacco, maraschino brine, and meaty game, buttressed by taut, silty tannins, vibrant acidity, and savory mineral grip, exploding into a long, spicy, stalky finish.
