Domaine Magellan, located in the charming village of Magalas near Pézenas in the heart of Languedoc, France, is a beacon of organic winemaking. Founded by Bruno Lafon, a Burgundian winemaker from the esteemed Domaine des Comtes Lafon, the estate embraces the region’s expressive sandstone terroirs. Converted to organic farming, the vineyard prioritizes sustainability, with hand-harvested grapes and meticulous sorting to ensure quality. Lafon’s Burgundian expertise blends with Languedoc’s vibrant character, producing elegant, aromatic wines. The estate’s old vines, some over 60 years, thrive on pebble-strewn soils, crafting wines that reflect both tradition and the southern art of living.
The 2020 Domaine Magellan 'Le Grenache de Magellan' IGP Pays d’Hérault is a 100% Grenache noir wine from 45- and 60-year-old vines grown on sandy, pebble-strewn soils. Hand-harvested in the early morning, grapes are sorted and transferred to aged concrete tanks for fermentation with indigenous yeasts. A pre-fermentative cold maceration ensures gentle extraction. The wine is aged in stainless steel tanks, preserving its vibrant fruit character. Alcohol content is 14% vol., and it contains sulfites. Certified organic, the vineyard avoids chemical treatments, with soil worked gently to prevent erosion and retain moisture, especially before harvest.

TASTING NOTE:

This 2020 Grenache displays a brilliant ruby robe with a nose dominated by blood orange and citrus, characteristic of Grenache on sandy terroirs. The palate is generous yet balanced, offering notes of red fruits and subtle spices. Its tannins are remarkably fine, providing a smooth, refreshing finish without heaviness. Medium-bodied, it bursts with raspberry and cherry, reflecting its expressive southern character. Ideal at 14°C, it pairs beautifully with grilled meats, Sétoise tielle, or stuffed squid. This wine is both approachable and elegant, showcasing the finesse and vibrancy of Languedoc’s terroir.
