Giuseppe Contratto founded his historic winery in 1867 in Canelli, Piedmont, Italy. He pioneered one of the first Italian sparkling wines by refermenting Moscato grapes in the bottle using the traditional method (Metodo Classico). The estate quickly gained prestige, exporting from around 1910 and becoming the official supplier to the Vatican, the Belgian royal house, and Italy’s House of Savoy. In 1919, Contratto released the country’s first vintage-dated Metodo Classico sparkling wine, the Extra Brut. Today, under the ownership of Giorgio Rivetti (La Spinetta), the winery focuses on elegant Alta Langa DOCG sparkling wines made primarily from estate-grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in high-altitude vineyards. These age in stunning UNESCO World Heritage “cathedral” cellars carved deep into the tuff limestone hills, maintaining perfect natural conditions for long lees aging. Contratto’s wines are renowned for their purity, complexity, structure, and finesse—true Italian classics with Champagne-like refinement.
Blanc de Blancs Alta Langa DOCG Pas Dosé 2020 is an elegant Metodo Classico sparkling wine from historic Giuseppe Contratto (est. 1867, Canelli, Piedmont). This vintage is made from 100% estate-grown Chardonnay sourced exclusively from the high-altitude Bossolasco vineyard in the Alta Langa zone. The vineyard sits at 700–780 m asl with south/south-east/south-west exposures on calcareous marl soils rich in calcium carbonate, silt, and white sand. These cooler, breezy conditions deliver vibrant acidity, finesse, and mineral character to the grapes, ideal for premium sparkling wine.
Bright straw yellow with fine, persistent perlage. The nose offers hints of tropical fruit, toasted hazelnuts, orange blossom, white flowers, and biscotti. On the palate it is fresh, delicate, and precise, with notes of aromatic herbs, bergamot, small white flowers, and savory minerality. Creamy texture with vibrant acidity and a long, elegant finish.
