The winery is named after its founder, Elvio Cogno, who was a legendary winemaker and a key figure in the renaissance of the Barolo region in the 1960s and 1970s. Today, Elvio Cogno is run by Valter Fissore, Elvio's son-in-law, who has continued the winery's tradition of producing exceptional wines. The winery owns several vineyards in the Langhe, including some of the most prestigious sites in the region, such as Ravera and Bricco Pernice. Cogno Vigna Elena Riserva Barolo, the wine is named after Elena, the daughter of winemaker Valter Fissore and his wife Nadia Cogno. The vineyard where the grapes for this wine are grown was planted by Valter and Nadia in 1990 to celebrate the birth of their daughter. The Vigna Elena vineyard is located at an altitude of 380 meters above sea level and has a south-facing slope. The soil is rich in limestone and clay, which contributes to the unique character of the wine.
The wine has a deep ruby color with aromas of red berries, roses, and spices. On the palate, it is full-bodied with firm tannins and flavors of cherries, plums, and tobacco. The wine has a long finish with notes of vanilla and oak.
The Cogno Vigna Elena Riserva Barolo is a full-bodied and complex wine that pairs well with hearty meat dishes. Roasted lamb, beef stew, grilled steak and aged cheeses.
