The winery is named after its founder, Elvio Cogno, who was a legendary winemaker and a key figure in the renaissance of the Barolo region in the 1960s and 1970s. Today, Elvio Cogno is run by Valter Fissore, Elvio's son-in-law, who has continued the winery's tradition of producing exceptional wines. The winery owns several vineyards in the Langhe, including some of the most prestigious sites in the region, such as Ravera and Bricco Pernice. Cogno Pre Phylloxera Barbera d'Alba is made from 100% Barbera grapes, which is come from a vineyard that was planted before the phylloxera epidemic that devastated European vineyards in the late 19th century. This means that the vines are much older than most vineyards, and are planted on their original rootstocks, which can result in wines with more complexity and character.
Deep ruby color with aromas of dark fruit, such as black cherry, blackberry, and plum, as well as a hint of spice and a subtle earthy note. On the palate, it is full-bodied with firm tannins and flavors of dark fruit, licorice, and a touch of vanilla.
The wine has a fresh acidity that balances the richness and makes it a great wine to pair with a range of hearty dishes, such as roasted meats, stews, and strong cheeses.
